Flat-rock Grimmia
Grimmia ovalis (Hedw.) Lindb.
Grimmia ovalis (Hedw.) Lindb. is a species in the family Grimmiaceae, commonly known as Flat-rock Grimmia. It was first described in 1871 and is reported from several regions including Labrador, Québec, Madeira Island, and parts of Europe. However, recent taxonomic studies have found that many specimens previously identified as G. ovalis actually belong to other species such as G. longirostris or G. montana. As a result, its presence in certain regions, including South Africa and Lesotho, has not been confirmed. The confusion between G. ovalis and closely related species has been longstanding, and only recent research has clarified the distinctions.
Description
Grimmia ovalis is a moss species within the family Grimmiaceae, known for its occurrence in regions such as Labrador, Québec, and parts of Europe. Despite its reported widespread distribution, recent revisions of Grimmia species have revealed that many specimens labeled as G. ovalis are misidentified. For example, in South Africa and Lesotho, collections previously attributed to G. ovalis were found to represent G. longirostris or G. montana. This misidentification has led to the exclusion of G. ovalis from the local flora in these regions. The confusion between G. ovalis and other species has persisted for a long time, with recent studies helping to clarify the taxonomic status of these mosses.
