The species has a circumboreal distribution and is found in regions such as Greenland, Labrador, Newfoundland, Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan, Yukon, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, and extends into the Nearctic, Palaearctic, Flanders, SE, and Vermont-US. First described in 1798 by Hayne, it is commonly referred to as Flat-Leaved Bladderwort.
