It is native to various regions across Africa and parts of Asia, including Angola, Botswana, Burkina, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Provinces, Caprivi Strip, Central African Republic, Chad, China South-Central, Congo, Ethiopia, Free State, Gabon, Guinea, Jawa, Kenya, KwaZulu-Natal, Lesser Sunda Is., and Madagascar. This grass species is also referred to as Tambookie grass and fine hood grass. It was first described in 1919.
