It is native to much of continental Europe, Britain, southwest Asia from Turkey to the Caucasus, and north Africa in the Atlas Mountains. It has been widely planted and is introduced outside its native range in Europe and areas of the USA and Western Australia with suitable climates.

Acer campestre is a species in the genus Acer, commonly known as Field Maple. It is part of the Sapindaceae family and was first described in 1753. The species is native to Europe, including regions such as Ontario, Prince Edward Island, DK, FI, SE, IE, NO, PT, Flanders, Latvia, Corse (Corsica), Finland, Ireland, and Norway, as well as parts of southwest Asia and north Africa. It has also been introduced to areas like Vermont-US, EE, ES, LV, BR, and other global regions with suitable climates.
