Comptonia peregrina is a member of the Myricaceae family and is native to eastern North America. It is the only living species in the genus Comptonia, with some extinct species also classified within the genus. The species has been documented in various regions, including New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Saskatchewan, and several U.S. states such as Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, and Minnesota. The scientific name was published in 1894 by Coult., based on the original work of L. There have been discussions regarding the spelling of the specific epithet in the protologue, with variations including 'asplenifolium' and 'asplenifolia'. A lectotype was proposed but could not be verified, leaving the name untypified.
