It is native to various regions in South America, including Colombia, where it is found in several departments such as Antioquia, Atlántico, and Bolívar. Its distribution also extends to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Belize, Benin, Bismarck Archipelago, Bolivia, Borneo, and parts of Brazil. The species was first described in 1837.
