Quercus cerris L., known as the European turkey oak, is a species in the Fagaceae family. It is native to southeastern Europe and Asia Minor and is the type species of Quercus sect. Cerris. This section is distinguished by shoot buds with soft bristles, leaf lobes with bristle tips, and acorns that mature in 18 months. The species was first published in 1753.

Description

Quercus cerris is distributed across several European countries, including France, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. The specimen initially sent by Scopoli to Linnaeus was not received until 1762 and is therefore not considered original material for the name. The species is characterized by its bristled buds and acorns that mature in a single year and a half. It is part of the oak genus and belongs to the beech family, Fagaceae.
