Epimedium ecalcaratum

Epimedium ecalcaratum is a species in the Berberidaceae family, native to South-Central China. It was described by G.Y. Zhong in 1991. The plant features a flowering stem 20-40 cm long, with a long-creeping rhizome. Leaves are trifoliolate to 5- or 7-foliolate, with ovate leaflets and a deeply cordate base. The inflorescence is a raceme with 7-14 flowers, each about 10 mm in diameter, yellow with purple sepals and spurless petals.
Description
Epimedium ecalcaratum has a flowering stem 20-40 cm long and a rhizome 1-3 mm in diameter. Leaves are basal and cauline, ranging from trifoliolate to 5- or 7-foliolate, with ovate leaflets 2.5-4 x 2-3 cm in size. The leaflets have a deeply cordate base with rounded lobes and spinose-serrate margins, and are long-pilose abaxially. The flowering stem typically bears two or three alternate or opposite trifoliolate leaves, or occasionally 5-foliolate leaves. The inflorescence is a raceme 10-16 cm long with 7-14 flowers, glandular hairy. Flowers are yellow, 10 mm in diameter, with four pale purple outer sepals and four purple-red inner sepals. Petals are yellow, sometimes spotted at the base, spurless, and obovate. Stamens are approximately 4.5 mm long with yellow anthers 1.5 mm in size.
