Picea rubens, commonly known as red spruce, is a spruce species native to eastern North America. It is found from Nova Scotia to eastern Quebec and southeastern Ontario, extending south through the Adirondack Mountains and New England along the Appalachians to western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee. It is also known by other names such as yellow spruce, West Virginia spruce, eastern spruce, and he-balsam. Red spruce is the provincial tree of Nova Scotia.
Description
Picea rubens (Sarg.) is a member of the Pinaceae family and is native to regions including Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, and parts of the United States such as Vermont, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania. It was first described in 1898. This species is characterized by its distribution across the eastern part of North America and is recognized for its ecological and regional significance.
