Juniperus virginiana, known as Eastern Juniper, is a species of juniper native to eastern North America, ranging from southeastern Canada to the Gulf of Mexico and east of the Great Plains. It is a member of the Cupressaceae family and was first described by Linnaeus in 1753. The species is sometimes confused with Thuja occidentalis but is distinct. It is replaced by Juniperus scopulorum farther west and by Juniperus ashei to the southwest.

Description

Juniperus virginiana is a coniferous tree found in a wide range of habitats across its native range, including woodlands, rocky slopes, and disturbed areas. It is a long-lived species and is often used in landscaping and as an ornamental plant. The species has been the subject of taxonomic discussion, particularly regarding the designation of a lectotype. Farjon (2005) attempted to designate a lectotype but failed to use the required phrasing under the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants. This issue has since been rectified. The species is also known by several common names, including eastern red cedar, red cedar, and Virginian juniper.
