Carpinus orientalis, known as the Eastern Hornbeam, is a species in the Betulaceae family, native to southeastern Europe and Western Asia. It is adapted to dry, hot environments and is found at lower elevations than Carpinus betulus. Along with C. betulus and Carpinus austrobalcanica, it is one of the three hornbeams native to Europe.
Description
Carpinus orientalis, described by Mill. in 1768, is a member of the genus Carpinus in the Betulaceae family. It is distributed across southeastern Europe and parts of Western Asia, including Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Hungary, Iran, Italy, Krym, North Caucasus, Romania, Sicilia, Transcaucasus, Turkey, and Yugoslavia. This species is distinguished by its ability to tolerate dry conditions and is typically found in hot, arid habitats at lower elevations compared to other hornbeams. It is one of three hornbeam species native to Europe, alongside Carpinus betulus and Carpinus austrobalcanica.
