It is found in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nepal, Assam, Bhutan, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, the Ryukyu Islands, and parts of China. The species was first described in 1820 by Wall. and belongs to the genus Fraxinus in the Oleaceae family.
