It ranges from Saskatchewan to Newfoundland and extends south to Pennsylvania, with high-elevation populations in the southern Appalachian Mountains to northern Georgia. It was first described in 1786.

It is found in regions including Labrador, Newfoundland, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Saskatchewan, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, and parts of the United States such as Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, and Michigan.
