Wagner and Farrar. The species is native to various regions in North America, including Vermont, Alberta, Colorado, and others.

Botrychium campestre is a member of the Ophioglossaceae family and is commonly referred to as prairiemoonwort, prairie dunewort, Iowa moonwort, or plains grapefern. It was first discovered in 1982 and described in 1986 by W.H. Wagner and Farrar. The plant is distributed across several regions in North America, including Vermont, Alberta, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Brunswick, New York, North Dakota, Ontario, Oregon, Québec, Saskatchewan, South Dakota, Washington, and Wisconsin.
