Erythronium dens-canis, known as Dog's-tooth-violet, is a bulbous herbaceous perennial in the Liliaceae family. Native to central and southern Europe, it is found from Portugal to Ukraine and is naturalised in parts of northern Europe, including Germany, Great Britain, and Ireland. It is one of two naturally occurring Erythronium species in Europe, the other being Erythronium caucasicum. Despite its name, it is unrelated to the Viola genus.
Description
Erythronium dens-canis is a flowering plant in the Liliaceae family. It is native to central and southern Europe, including Portugal, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and the Czech Republic, and has been naturalised in regions like Germany, Great Britain, and Ireland. The species is not closely related to the Viola genus, despite its common name. It is one of two naturally occurring Erythronium species in Europe, the other being Erythronium caucasicum, which is found in the extreme southeast of the continent. The plant is a bulbous herbaceous perennial and is known for its distinctive flowers.
