Phaulothamnus spinescens is a species in the genus Phaulothamnus, belonging to the family Achatocarpaceae. It is native to regions in Mexico and Texas. The species was first described in 1885 by A. Gray.

Phaulothamnus spinescens is a member of the genus Phaulothamnus, which was previously classified under the family Phytolaccaceae but is now recognized as part of the Achatocarpaceae. This species is distributed across central, northeast, northwest, and southwest Mexico, as well as Texas. It is known by the common name 'devilqueen' in English. The genus Phaulothamnus is characterized by its spiny growth habit and is part of a reclassified group of plants that have been moved from the Phytolaccaceae to the Achatocarpaceae.
