Dendrobangia boliviana Rusby
Dendrobangia boliviana, described by Rusby in 1896, is a species in the family Metteniusaceae. It is distributed across several regions in South America, including parts of Brazil, Colombia, Bolivia, and other neighboring countries. The species is characterized by its elliptical, laterally compressed fruit and a distinct endocarp structure.
Description
The fruit of Dendrobangia boliviana is elliptical, laterally compressed, and black when dry, with a glabrous epicarp and a mesocarp approximately 190 µm thick. The calyx is persistent. The endocarp is cream-colored, bilaterally symmetrical, unilocular, and single-seeded. It is elliptical in lateral view and triangular or pyriform in cross-section. A large channel is present on the dorsal side, mirrored by a keel on the ventral side. The endocarp wall is 300–320 µm thick, composed of two layers of sclerotic cells. The outer layer consists of 6–8 rows of anticlinally or isodiametrically oriented cells, while the inner layer contains 1–5 rows of periclinally oriented, tunnel-shaped cells.
