Dark Red Helleborine
Epipactis atrorubens (Hoffm.) Besser

Epipactis atrorubens, commonly known as the dark red helleborine, is a terrestrial orchid species belonging to the Orchidaceae family. It is characterized by its deep purple flowers and is found in a wide range of regions across Europe and parts of North America. The plant typically grows in woods and on rocky slopes, preferring calcareous soils.
Description
The plant features a short, more or less horizontal rhizome. The stem ranges from 15 to 100 cm in height and is either glabrous or sparsely pubescent, often violet in color at the base with sheathing scales. The leaves are distichous, with 5 to 10 leaves that are 4 to 10 cm long and 1 to 5 cm wide, shaped ovate to ovate-lanceolate and ending in an acute to acuminate tip. The raceme is 7 to 25 cm long and bears 8 to 18 flowers, with a densely pubescent rhachis. The bracts are lanceolate and acute, with the lowest bract sometimes equaling or exceeding the flowers in length. The flowers are patent, with deep purple perianth segments. The outer segments are 6 to 7 mm long and ovate, while the inner segments are elliptical. The labellum is 5.5 to 6.5 mm in size, with a cupuliform hypochile that is green with a red margin and red spots inside. The epichile is cordate-reniform, acute, with a recurved apex, wider than long, and deep reddish-purple, featuring 2 to 3 rugose protuberances at the base. The rostellum is persistent, and the ovary is densely pubescent. The plant has a chromosome count of 2n = 40.
Habitat
Epipactis atrorubens thrives in woods and on rocky slopes, particularly in calcareous soils. It is a calcicole, meaning it prefers and often requires calcium-rich soils for optimal growth. This habitat preference is typical of many species in the genus Epipactis, which are often found in well-drained, nutrient-rich environments.
Cultivation
Cultivating Epipactis atrorubens requires attention to its specific needs. It prefers partial shade to full shade and well-drained, calcareous soils. The plant benefits from a moist but not waterlogged environment. In cultivation, it is important to mimic its natural habitat by providing adequate calcium and maintaining a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Propagation can be done through division of rhizomes or by seed, though seed germination may be challenging and requires specific conditions, such as a symbiotic relationship with mycorrhizal fungi.
Uses
Epipactis atrorubens is primarily valued for its ornamental qualities and is sometimes cultivated in specialized gardens and botanical collections. It is not commonly used in traditional medicine or for commercial purposes. Its conservation status is not of immediate concern, but like many orchids, it can be sensitive to habitat loss and environmental changes. The plant is also of interest to botanists and horticulturists due to its unique floral structure and ecological adaptations.
