Description
Helianthus atrorubens is a sunflower species in the genus Helianthus. It occurs naturally in the southeastern U.S., with a distribution that includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, New Jersey, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and Turkmenistan. The species is recognized by the common names Dark-eyed Sunflower and purpledisc sunflower. The plant was first described by Linnaeus in 1753. Historical taxonomic discussions have addressed the typification of the species, with Watson's choice given priority over other proposed type specimens.
