Reseda lutea L., known as Cut-Leaf Mignonette, is a species in the Resedaceae family. It is native to regions including British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan, parts of Europe, and several countries in Asia and Africa. First published in 1753, the species has been the subject of taxonomic review, with R. mediterranea determined to be a synonym. A neotype was designated due to discrepancies between the original material and Linnaeus' description. The plant has a long history of use in producing a yellow dye called 'weld,' though the closely related R. luteola was more commonly used for this purpose.

Description

Reseda lutea is an herbaceous flowering plant recognized for its fragrant properties. It has been historically significant for its use in dye production, particularly for making a yellow dye known as 'weld.' While it shares this use with the similar species Reseda luteola, the latter was more commonly employed for dyeing. Taxonomic studies have clarified that R. mediterranea is not the original material for R. lutea and is instead a synonym. A neotype was established to accurately represent the species as described by Linnaeus. The plant is distributed across multiple continents, including North America, Europe, and parts of Asia and Africa.
