Malus toringoides (Rehder) Hughes

Malus toringoides, known as Cut-leaf Crab Apple, is a species in the Rosaceae family. It is native to Southern Asia, with records from China North-Central, China South-Central, and Tibet. This small tree or shrub reaches 3–10 m in height and is characterized by its 3–lobed or divided leaves with crenate margins. It flowers from April to May and produces yellow pomes from September. It grows in terrestrial, seasonally green habitats, typically in forests on slopes at elevations of 1500–3700 m. Chromosome numbers include 2n = 31, 34, 51, 54, 68.
Description
Malus toringoides (Rehder) Hughes is a small tree or shrub reaching 3–10 m in height. Its leaves are elliptic to ovate, 3.9–6.8 × 1.5–3.6 cm, with a crenate margin and a 3–lobed or divided blade. The inflorescence is an umbelliform corymb with 3–6 white, obovate flowers. The pome is ellipsoidal to subglobose, 1.0–1.3 cm in diameter, and yellow in color. It is found in forests on slopes at elevations of 1500–3700 m in Southern Asia. The species was first described in 1920.
