Nicotiana tabacum, known as cultivated tobacco, is an annual herbaceous plant in the genus Nicotiana and family Solanaceae. It is the most widely cultivated species in the genus, primarily for its leaves used in tobacco production. The plant is native to Bolivia but is now cultivated globally. It typically reaches heights of 1 to 2 metres. Genetic research suggests it may be a hybrid of Nicotiana sylvestris, N. tomentosiformis, and possibly N. otophora.

Description

Nicotiana tabacum is a member of the Solanaceae family and is widely cultivated for its leaves, which are processed for commercial tobacco. It is an annual plant that can grow up to 2 metres tall. Originally from Bolivia, it is now cultivated in many regions, including parts of South America, Europe, and the Caribbean. The plant's origin is thought to involve hybridization between several wild Nicotiana species. Cultivated tobacco is a key species in the genus Nicotiana and is economically significant due to its widespread use in the tobacco industry.
