Ctenanthe oppenheimiana, a member of the Marantaceae family, is a native of Brazil. It is an evergreen perennial that can grow over 1 m tall and wide, with long, narrow leaves up to 40 cm in length. The leaves feature dark green bands on the secondary veins, merging at the margins, with cream-colored bands in between and red undersides. The cultivar 'Tricolor' is a popular ornamental variety, having received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit in the UK. It is often confused with Stromanthe sanguinea 'Triostar', but differs by the lack of regular leaf banding and more rounded leaf shape in the latter.

The leaves display dark green bands along the secondary veins, which merge at the edges, with cream-colored bands in between. The underside of the leaves has a reddish coloration. The 'Tricolor' cultivar is a common ornamental variety, noted for its ornamental value and has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit in the UK. This cultivar is often mistaken for Stromanthe sanguinea 'Triostar', but the two can be distinguished by the lack of regular banding on the leaves of the Stromanthe and the more rounded leaf shape in Ctenanthe.
