crisped bristle fern
Trichomanes crispum L.

Trichomanes crispum L. is a species in the fern family Hymenophyllaceae, commonly known as the crisped bristle fern. It is native to regions in Central and South America, including Belize, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, and Jamaica. The species was first described in 1753 by Linnaeus. It has been the subject of nomenclatural discussion, particularly regarding its status as a conserved type for the genus Trichomanes. Although proposed as a conserved type by Jarvis in 1992 and recommended by the Committee for Pteridophyta in 1999, subsequent taxonomic codes have not recognized the Plumier plate as a conserved type, making it a lectotype instead.
Description
Trichomanes crispum L. is a member of the Hymenophyllaceae family, a group of small, often epiphytic ferns. It is distributed across several countries in Central and South America, including Brazil, Colombia, and Costa Rica. The species was first published by Linnaeus in 1753. Taxonomic discussions have focused on its role in the nomenclature of the genus Trichomanes. Jarvis proposed it as a conserved type in 1992, and the Committee for Pteridophyta supported this recommendation in 1999. However, the Plumier plate, initially proposed as the generitype, has not been included in subsequent taxonomic codes, resulting in its classification as a lectotype rather than a conserved type.
