Crinum kunthianum belongs to the genus Crinum within the Amaryllidaceae family. It is distributed across the departments of Antioquia, Cauca, Chocó, Nariño, and Valle in Colombia, as well as in Ecuador and Nicaragua. The species was formally published in 1847 by M.Roem.
