Convulsion Root

Monotropa uniflora is a perennial, non-photosynthetic plant in the Ericaceae family, found in temperate regions of Asia, North America, and northern South America. Its coloration varies from waxy white to pale pink or deep red, with some specimens showing black flecks. The plant is named for its single sharply curved stem bearing one flower. It grows in clusters and depends on a fungal network for nutrients. The species was first described by Linnaeus in 1753. Taxonomic discussions have clarified that the Kalm specimen in LINN is the correct type. It is commonly called Convulsion Root in English and is found in regions including Labrador, Newfoundland, Alberta, and parts of South America.
