Trillium reliquum, known as Confederate wakerobin, is a herbaceous flowering perennial in the Melanthiaceae family. It is native to the southeastern United States, specifically southeast Alabama, central and west Georgia, and a disjunct population in east Georgia and southwest South Carolina. This relict species was once more widespread but now exists in limited groups due to habitat loss from deforestation for agriculture and pine farming.
Description
Trillium reliquum is a perennial herb in the Melanthiaceae family, found in a limited range across southeast Alabama, central and west Georgia, and a disjunct population in east Georgia and southwest South Carolina. As a relict species, it has declined in abundance due to significant habitat loss from forest clearing for agricultural and pine farm development. It is also known as Confederate wakerobin or Confederate trillium.
