Hyparrhenia hirta is a grass species in the Poaceae family, known as common thatching grass. It is native to much of Africa and Eurasia and has been introduced to other regions, including Australia, the United States, and parts of Europe. In South Africa, it is a common thatching grass and is also used for livestock grazing and weaving mats and baskets. In eastern Australia, it is considered a tenacious noxious weed. The species was first published in 1919.
