Rumex acetosella, known as Common Sheep Sorrel, is a flowering plant in the Polygonaceae family. Native to Eurasia and the British Isles, it is a common perennial weed. It has green arrowhead-shaped leaves and red-tinted, deeply ridged stems. It reproduces via an aggressive rhizome system. The plant produces maroon female flowers on tall, upright stems.
Description
Rumex acetosella is widely distributed across Greenland, Labrador, Newfoundland, Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Saskatchewan, Yukon, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, BR, SFF Iguaque, and several national parks in South America. It was first published in 1753 by L. The plant is also known by the common names red sorrel, sheep's sorrel, field sorrel, and sour weed. It is characterized by its rhizomatous growth and distinctive maroon flowers. It is a common weed in various habitats.
