Description
Equisetum hyemale is a member of the Equisetaceae family and is native to Eurasia and Greenland. It is an evergreen perennial herbaceous pteridophyte. Formerly, it was considered to include a subspecies from North America, but this is now classified as a separate species, Equisetum praealtum. The species has a wide distribution, recorded in regions such as DK, FI, IS, NO, SE, ZA, AU, BR, and various European and Asian countries. The scientific name was first published in 1753 by L. A discussion in Linnaean taxonomy notes a neotype designation by Hauke, though original material exists, making this designation contrary to Art. 9.11.
