Hypoxis hirsuta, known as Common Goldstar, is a perennial plant in the Hypoxidaceae family. It is native to the United States, Canada, and northeastern Mexico. The species was published in 1894 and is sometimes classified in the Amaryllidaceae or Liliaceae families. It is also known by several common names, including common star-grass, eastern yellow stargrass, yellow star grass, and yellow star flower.
Description
Hypoxis hirsuta is a member of the genus Hypoxis and is found in regions including Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan, and various U.S. states from Alabama to Maine, as well as in northeastern Mexico. Previously, this species was considered a superfluous name for Ornithogalum hirsutum L. (1753). The plant is recognized for its ornamental value and is sometimes cultivated. Its placement in the Hypoxidaceae family is standard, though it has been historically associated with the Amaryllidaceae or Liliaceae families in some classifications.
