Melampyrum pratense L., commonly known as common cow-wheat, is a species in the Orobanchaceae family. It was first published in 1753 and is native to regions including Flanders, the Baltic States, Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria, Central and Eastern Europe, and parts of the British Isles. The species has been discussed in taxonomic literature, particularly regarding its status as a conserved type for the genus. A proposal by Jarvis in 1992 to conserve the type was later deemed unnecessary by the General Committee.
Description
Melampyrum pratense is a member of the Orobanchaceae family and is widely distributed across Europe, including areas such as Austria, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, and Ireland. The species was described by Linnaeus in 1753 and has since been the subject of taxonomic review. Jarvis proposed in 1992 that Melampyrum pratense be designated as the conserved type for the genus, but the General Committee later determined that this action was not required. The species is known by the common name common cow-wheat in English.
