Clethra scabra is a shrub or tree in the Clethraceae family, native to the eastern Andes and adjacent montane woodlands and Chaco of Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, and northwest Argentina. It grows at altitudes between 950 and 2,500 m and can reach up to 25 m in height. The species flowers in March and is characterized by simple, ovate to elongate and slightly obovate leaves, 8 to 10 cm long and 4 to 6 cm wide, with stellate hairs and prominent veins on the lower surface. Its white flowers are small and arranged in terminal racemes.

Description

Clethra scabra, described by Pers. in 1805, is a member of the genus Clethra. It is found in the BR, Global, Argentina Northwest, Bolivia, Brazil Northeast, Brazil Southeast, Brazil South, Brazil West-Central, and Paraguay. The plant thrives in montane habitats and is distinguished by its terminal clusters of white flowers and hairy, prominently veined leaves. It is a significant component of the flora in its native range.
