Fraxinus sieboldiana, known as Chinese flowering ash, is a deciduous shrub in the Oleaceae family. Native to southeastern China, Korea, and Japan, it thrives on wooded slopes and near streams. It is hardy to USDA zone 6. A variegated cultivar, 'Rising Sun', is cultivated.
Description
Fraxinus sieboldiana is a deciduous shrub reaching up to 1.5 meters in height. Young branches are yellowish-brown and hairy. Leaves are alternate, lanceolate, ovate, or spatulate, 3–5 cm long and 2–3 cm wide, with serrated margins or three lobes. The upper leaf surface is dark green and hairy, while the lower surface has yellowish pubescence. Flowers are white, 10 mm in diameter, arranged in panicles with pedicels 1.0–1.3 cm long. The flowering period is mid-May to mid-June, with fruiting from July to October. The species is found in China, Japan, and Korea. Taxonomic notes compare it to related species such as Spiraea chartacea and S. dasyantha, with distinctions based on leaf and sepal characteristics.
