Lycium chinense, also known as Chinese box-thorn, is a shrub in the Solanaceae family. It is one of two species that produce the goji berry, the other being Lycium barbarum. The plant is recognized in two varieties: L. chinense var. chinense and L. chinense var. potaninii. It is native to and cultivated in various regions, including parts of Europe and Asia. Common names for the species include Chinese matrimony-vine, Chinese teaplant, Chinese wolfberry, and Chinese desert-thorn.

Description

Lycium chinense is a member of the genus Lycium and the family Solanaceae. It is widely distributed across multiple regions, including Ontario, Portugal, Denmark, Norway, Taiwan, Croatia, Ireland, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Italy, Portugal, Greece, Austria, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. The species was first described in 1768 by the author Mill. It is known for its production of goji berries, which are commonly used in traditional medicine and as a food supplement. The plant is also recognized by several other common names, such as Chinese matrimony-vine and Chinese teaplant.
