Picea chihuahuana, known as the Chihuahua Spruce, is a medium-sized evergreen tree native to northwest Mexico. It can reach heights of 25–35 m with a trunk diameter of up to 1 m. This species is found in 25 small populations within the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains in Chihuahua and Durango, growing at altitudes between 2300 and 3200 m. It typically occurs along stream sides in mountain valleys where soil moisture is higher than expected given the region's low rainfall.

Description

Picea chihuahuana is a member of the Pinaceae family and is part of the Picea genus. It was first described in 1942 by Martínez. The species is adapted to the moderate altitudes of the Sierra Madre Occidental, where it is found in moist, streamside habitats despite the generally arid conditions of the region. Its distribution is limited to the Global and Mexico Northeast regions, with a restricted range within the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains.
