Chihuahua Pine
Pinus leiophylla Schiede ex Schltdl. & Cham.

Pinus leiophylla, known as Chihuahua Pine, is a species native to Mexico, extending into Arizona and New Mexico. It is found along the Sierra Madre Occidental and Sierra Madre del Sur from Chihuahua to Oaxaca, at elevations between 1600 and 3000 meters. This pine thrives in regions with 600 to 1000 mm of annual rainfall, primarily during the summer, and can tolerate winter frosts.
Description
Pinus leiophylla belongs to the Pinaceae family and is part of the genus Pinus. It is commonly called Chihuahua Pine, smooth-leaf pine, and yellow pine. The species was first described in 1831. It grows in a range that spans from 29° North to 17° North latitude. The tree is adapted to a semi-arid climate and is found in central, gulf, northeast, northwest, and southwest regions of Mexico, as well as in the United States in southeast Arizona and southwest New Mexico.
