Mollugo verticillata, commonly known as Carpet-Weed, is an annual plant native to tropical America and widely distributed in North America, Europe, and parts of Asia. It is a prostrate, rapidly spreading species often found in disturbed areas. The plant is edible and has been present in North America for approximately 3000 years. It is also known by the alternative common name 'Indian chickweed' and is referred to in China as zhong leng su mi cao.

Description

Mollugo verticillata belongs to the family Molluginaceae and is characterized by its low-growing, circular mat that can spread over other vegetation. It is found in regions such as British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec, and several European countries including Belgium, France, and the Netherlands. Though often considered an invasive weed, it has historical and culinary significance. The species was first described by Linnaeus in 1753. It is a common plant in disturbed habitats across much of the United States and parts of Canada. Typification of the species has been discussed in botanical literature, with notes on the lack of an effective type designation from the original material.
