Cucumis melo L., commonly known as cantaloupe, is a species in the Cucurbitaceae family. The fruit is a pepo, with sweet or bland flesh and a rind that can be smooth, ribbed, wrinkled, or netted. The species is sometimes called muskmelon, though the term is used inconsistently. Varieties include the musky netted-rind American cantaloupe and the inodorous smooth-rind honeydew melon. The species was first published in 1753.
Description
Cucumis melo is a cultivated species in the gourd family, Cucurbitaceae. It has been developed into numerous varieties, including those with sweet or bland flesh and rinds that may be smooth, ribbed, wrinkled, or netted. The term 'muskmelon' is applied variably, sometimes as a specific name for the netted-rind American cantaloupe and sometimes generically for any sweet-flesh variety, such as the honeydew melon. The species is widely distributed and has been documented in regions including Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Great Britain, and parts of South America. The name was first published by Linnaeus in 1753.
