It is native to North America and is found in coastal regions from Alaska and British Columbia to northern California on the West Coast, and from Labrador to New York on the East Coast.

Its distribution includes coastal habitats in Canada and the northern United States, ranging from Alaska, British Columbia, and California on the West Coast to Labrador, New Brunswick, New York, and other regions on the East Coast. It was first described in 1831.
