It is characterized by its aromatic foliage and is found in regions such as India, Brazil, Algeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, the Central African Republic, Chad, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, the Gulf States, Iran, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Libya, Mali, and Mauritania. The species was first described in 1815.
