Calliergon cordifolium is a moss species in the family Calliergonaceae, commonly called calliergon moss or heart-leaved spearmoss. It thrives in wet environments such as marshes, wet woodlands, and along streams and ditches, often growing submerged in water. This species is found in regions including Labrador, Québec, Vermont, and parts of Europe and Asia. It typically grows in lowland areas but has been recorded at elevations up to 910 meters in Scotland. Calliergon cordifolium has a circumpolar Boreo-temperate distribution and is present in Europe, North America, and parts of Asia, including Japan and Turkey, as well as in New Zealand.
Description
Calliergon cordifolium (Hedw.) Kindb. is a species of the genus Calliergon, known for its preference for moist to wet habitats. It is commonly found in alder or willow woodlands, as well as in ditches, pools, and streams. The species grows in tufts and often coexists with other mosses. It is widely distributed across the Boreo-temperate regions, including Europe, North America, and parts of Asia. It has been recorded in Labrador, Québec, Vermont, and several European countries, as well as in Japan and New Zealand. Calliergon cordifolium was first described in 1894 and is adapted to a range of wetland environments, from lowland to moderate elevations.
