Cylindropuntia californica, or California cholla, is a species of cholla cactus found in Baja California, Mexico, and the southernmost part of California, United States. It is characterized by a short, decumbent growth form, yellow-green flowers, elongated stems, and short spines. The species occurs in coastal sage scrub and coastal chaparral habitats, with some varieties found in foothills and deserts in Baja California. Variety californica is considered rare and threatened in California, with a CNPS listing of 1B.1, due to its limited occurrences and development pressures. Previously, its range was thought to be larger due to the inclusion of Cylindropuntia bernardina as variety parkeri.

Description

Cylindropuntia californica belongs to the Cactaceae family and is native to Middle America and North America, with specific occurrences in California and the Mexico Northwest region. It was first described in 1936. The plant is distinguished by its yellow-green flowers and short spines. It grows in coastal sage scrub and chaparral, with some populations in foothills and deserts. The species has two recognized varieties, with variety californica being rare in California. Its conservation status is influenced by habitat loss and development. Previously, Cylindropuntia bernardina was included within this species as variety parkeri, but it is now treated separately.
