Caryocar nuciferum L. is a member of the Caryocar genus within the Caryocaraceae family. It is distributed across northern South America and the Caribbean. The species was described by Linnaeus in 1771, likely based on an Allemand description, though Linnaeus may not have examined a specimen directly. This information is supported by botanical literature, including references in Flora Neotropica.
