It is native to regions such as Albania, Algeria, the Baleares, Bulgaria, Corse, Cyprus, East Aegean Is., France, Greece, Iran, Iraq, Italy, Kriti, Lebanon-Syria, Morocco, the North Caucasus, Palestine, Portugal, Romania, and Sardegna. The species was formally published in 1997. It is known as the Butterfly orchid in English and other languages. The nomenclatural history notes that Enayet Hossain & El-Gadi designated specimens 1054.29 and 1054.30 (LINN) as the type, but they are not part of a single gathering, so Art. 9.15 does not apply.
