Buddleja crispa, the Himalayan butterfly bush, is a deciduous shrub native to regions including Iran, Afghanistan, Bhutan, North India, Nepal, Pakistan, and China. It thrives in dry river beds, rocky slopes, exposed cliffs, and thickets at elevations between 1400 and 4300 meters. Described by Bentham in 1835, it was introduced to cultivation in 1850 and recognized for its ornamental value. It received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Merit in 1961 and ranked 8th in a 1997 public poll. However, its limited cold hardiness restricts its widespread cultivation.
Description
Buddleja crispa belongs to the genus Buddleja in the family Scrophulariaceae. It is distributed across Afghanistan, China North-Central, China South-Central, East Himalaya, India, Iran, Nepal, Pakistan, Tibet, and West Himalaya. The species is valued for its aesthetic appeal and was introduced to horticulture in 1850. Despite its recognition and awards, its cultivation is limited by its lack of complete cold hardiness, which affects its popularity in colder regions.
