Cliftonia monophylla (Lam.) Britton is a member of the Cyrillaceae family and is commonly called buckwheat tree. This species was formally published in 1891. It belongs to the genus Cliftonia, which includes other related woody plants. The species is native to the southeastern United States and is characterized by its shrub-like growth form and simple, alternate leaves. It produces small, inconspicuous flowers and is often found in acidic, sandy soils in forested areas.
