Osmundastrum cinnamomeum, known as buckhorn, is a fern species in the Osmundaceae family. It is found in the Americas and Asia, including regions like Labrador, Ontario, the eastern United States, Mexico, the West Indies, South America, and parts of Asia such as Japan, China, and Vietnam. The species was published in 1848 and is the only living member of the genus Osmundastrum.
Description
Osmundastrum cinnamomeum is a native fern species occurring in North and South America, as well as parts of Asia. It is the only species in the genus Osmundastrum, which was established after phylogenetic studies showed that Osmunda was not a monophyletic group. The fern is distributed across regions including Labrador, Ontario, the eastern United States, eastern Mexico, the West Indies, Peru, Paraguay, and in Asia from southeastern Siberia to Vietnam. Its common names include cinnamon fern and buckhorn.
