It has compound, steely-gray, somewhat fleshy leaves and small, maroon, drooping flowers. Native to the western United States, it often grows at altitude as part of the undergrowth in part-shade conditions. The plant's fleshy roots store food to sustain it through dry summers and support new growth in the following spring.
