This plant is native to eastern Asia and has a wide distribution, including regions such as Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Great Britain, China (North-Central and Southeast), Japan, Korea, Nansei-shoto, Tajikistan, and Taiwan. The species was first described by Thunb. in 1784.
